R&B och souldrottningen Mavis Staples släpper nu en låt till förmån för välgörenhet. I över 60 år har Staples verkat som artist, först i familjebandet The Staple Singers och sedan som soloartist. Hon är en uttalad människorättsaktivist och har kämpat för lika rättigheter sedan 50-talet.
Tillsammans med Jeff Tweedy (WILCO) har Staples skrivit låten ”All In It Together” och alla intäkter från detta släpp kommer oavkortat att gå till organisationen My Block, My Hood, My City som arbetar med att se till att seniorerna i Chicago kan få leveranser med mat, hygienartiklar och annat som behövs (mer info finns här).
Mavis Staples kommenterar såhär:
“The song speaks to what we’re going through now – everyone is in this together, whether you like it or not, It doesn’t matter how much money you have, what race or sex you are, where you live…it can still touch you. It’s hit so many people in our country and around the world in such a horrible way and I just hope this song can bring a little light to the darkness. We will get through this but we’re going to have to do it together. If this song is able to bring any happiness or relief to anyone out there in even the smallest way, I wanted to make sure that I helped to do that.”
Staples har under sin långa karriär hyllats som en medborgarrättskämpe av rang och anses också vara en av USA’s främsta förespråkare för frihet och fred. Hennes musikaliska inflytande har varit, och är, stort och hon har valts in i både The Blues Hall of Fame och Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Staples har haft äran att inte bara uppträda för John F. Kennedy när han svors in som president, utan har även uppträtt i Vita Huset för Barack Obama. Förra året släppte hon sitt tolfte album ”We Get By” och gästade då också Sverige.
