“The Bitter Truth” – det första albumet från Evanescence med originalmusik på ett decennium – släpps idag via Sony Music.
Albumet är en återgång till det amerikanska bandets rötter, och en återspegling av både de personliga tragedierna i bandmedlemmarnas egna liv (den oväntade bortgången av Amy Lees bror, den plötsliga förlusten av ett barn som basisten Tim McCord fick uppleva) och de kollektiva tragedierna på planeten såsom ojämlikhet, rasism, pandemi och ekonomisk omvälvning. Men trots livets mörker och bitterhet är albumets rungande budskap ett ljust sådant: att kämpa på och härda ut är bättre än att ge upp.
Under 2020 tvingades bandmedlemmarna att skriva och spela in en stor del av albumet i karantän, separerade från varandra, och med en flödande arbetsprocess och fria kreativa gränser återvände de på ett naturligt sätt till det klassiska, eldiga sound som de är kända för. Textmässigt väckte världens tyngd en rå ärlighet och fick bandet att lyfta både gamla och nya teman. För frontsångerskan Amy Lee är det en läkande process att skriva och sjunga om ämnen som inre demoner, sorg, orättvisor, kvinnohat och “Jag är okej”- fasaden som samhället tvingar på de som kämpar med sin mentala hälsa. Dessa ämnen kulminerade i slutändan i en känsla av motståndskraft.

I want people to come away from this album feeling hope and empowerment and strength. Something that inspires me a lot in life is people who have overcome great obstacles – survivors. I hope we can pass on the idea that even when things are impossibly painful life is worth living. Leaning into those darkest, most challenging moments, facing them and finding we’re not alone in them, makes us real. Makes us strong enough to take them on. And it brings us together, if we let it, in a deeper appreciation of the light… and the truth. Thanks for the memories. Now let’s go make some new ones.
